Garage Sales - Do I need a Permit?

No. However, there are some rules around garage sales.

  • You cannot have more than two (2) in a calendar year.
  • You cannot have one that lasts more than 72 hours.
  • The location of the sale must be cleaned up within 24-hours of the end of the sale.

It is a good idea to read ordinance § 3.07 before placing any garage sale signs in the city. Because, while you do not need a permit for a garage sale sign, there are rules to that as well.

  •   No garage sale signs can be attached to any power poles or traffic light poles.
  •   No garage sale signs can be put in the city easement or the TxDOT easement.
  •   No garage sale signs can be posted at street corners, without the property owner’s permission.

The following types of signs are prohibited by city ordinance § 3.07.013. Refer to the ordinance for a full list of authorized and prohibited signs.

  •   Snipe signs
  •   Pennants
  •   Trailer signs
  •   Vehicular signs

We recommend using public places such as bulletin boards to post flyers and utilizing social media.
